The United States celebrated the 250th anniversary of the Army with a massive military parade in Washington, D.C., on June 14, 2025—an event that also marked former President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday. The parade, which featured elaborate troop formations, heavy artillery, military flyovers, music, and fireworks, was personally requested by Trump. He delivered an eight-minute speech that celebrated the historical valor of the U.S. military, invoking iconic battles and praising the fighting spirit of Army personnel. Vice President JD Vance, a Marine veteran, also spoke, while singer Lee Greenwood performed “God Bless the U.S.A.” to conclude the program. The event was underscored by messages from service members reflecting on their experiences, accompanied by patriotic music and festive explosions of fireworks over the Washington skyline.

While the capital hosted a grand display of military pride, thousands across the country gathered in protest under the theme “No Kings,” expressing opposition to what critics see as Trump’s authoritarian tendencies. Demonstrations took place in cities nationwide, and tensions ran particularly high in Los Angeles, where police used tear gas and flash bangs to disperse crowds—including families with children—outside City Hall. Protesters were visibly shaken by the unexpected escalation, with some describing the emotional toll of being gassed during what they intended to be peaceful gatherings. In Philadelphia, police trailed demonstrators on bikes and motorbikes, eventually dispersing the last groups and detaining several individuals.

Despite concerns over weather, the Washington parade kicked off early due to the threat of thunderstorms. Rain remained light, but thick cloud cover limited the number of military aircraft on display. Even so, the scale of the event—described as unlike anything seen in generations—conveyed Trump’s desire to elevate military celebration to the scale of other nations. He defended the parade’s estimated $25–45 million cost by asserting that America should take more pride in its victories. With a mix of pomp and controversy, the day stood as a vivid tableau of national celebration alongside political division.
