Ian Andre Roberts, superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for allegedly residing and working in the U.S. without legal status or work authorization. ICE stated that Roberts, a Guyana national, had a final order of removal issued in May 2024 and was previously charged with weapon possession in 2020. Despite these legal issues, Roberts had been serving as superintendent since July 2023, following a career in educational leadership across several states. His arrest occurred after he fled a traffic stop, and he was later found with a loaded handgun, cash, and a hunting knife. Federal law prohibits undocumented individuals from possessing firearms, prompting further investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The school district expressed shock and concern, noting that Roberts had passed a third-party background check, completed employment eligibility forms, and disclosed a prior firearm charge during the hiring process. The district claimed it was unaware of the 2024 removal order and received no prior notification from ICE. Roberts was described as a respected leader with over 20 years of experience, holding multiple degrees and certifications, and even competing as an Olympian in track and field. Interim Superintendent Matt Smith and School Board Chair Jackie Norris called for empathy and acknowledged the emotional impact of the arrest on the community, emphasizing Roberts’ contributions and the district’s commitment to transparency.
