Washington Attorney General Nick Brown acknowledged widespread online allegations of fraud involving taxpayer-funded childcare centers but said there is currently no evidence of criminal activity. In his first public comments on the issue, Brown emphasized that while any credible claims must be taken seriously, he is equally concerned about the harassment and racist rhetoric directed at Somali‑run daycare centers in Washington, Ohio, and Minnesota. He urged transparency from state and local agencies as they review both substantiated and unsubstantiated claims.

Brown clarified that his office does not have original criminal jurisdiction and relies on local or federal law enforcement to investigate potential crimes, while his team focuses on consumer protection and civil rights issues. The Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) responded by outlining its safeguards for public funds, including monthly random audits, targeted audits when irregularities are suspected, and coordination with the DSHS Office of Fraud and Accountability. DCYF encouraged the public to report suspected fraud through its 24‑hour hotline.
