The new software can write texts in seconds that are barely distinguishable from those of a human. Microsoft has already invested billions in the software and wants to release it to customers. The Darmstadt-based "Leap in Time Lab" has examined the software on behalf of companies and warns of risks. Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of everyday life, as seen in a recent survey by Elon University, where 52% of U.S. adults reported using large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot. Among these users, 34% interact with LLMs daily, with ChatGPT being the most popular option, followed by Google’s Gemini. While many use AI for personal purposes, such as casual conversations and companionship, over half have leveraged these tools to enhance productivity in work-related tasks like email writing, research, and document summarization. Younger adults, especially those aged 18-29, and households with children under 18 are among the most frequent users.

Despite their growing popularity, LLMs evoke mixed feelings. On one hand, many users value their ability to exhibit personality traits like confidence and humor, with 38% believing these models could form deep relationships with humans. On the other hand, concerns about their societal impact persist, with 63% fearing that LLMs could replace human communication and 59% worrying about job losses. The political landscape reflects debates over AI’s role, with Republican users showing more interest in using LLMs for political information. Meanwhile, educational institutions face challenges as 36% of respondents reported using these models for schoolwork. These findings highlight the dual role of AI as both a powerful tool and a topic of societal concern.
