Mitch Haniger, a veteran outfielder, has been released by the Seattle Mariners due to lingering left shoulder soreness during spring training. Haniger, 34, was in his second stint with the team, having signed a three-year contract with the San Francisco Giants in December 2022. The Mariners announced his release on Sunday, and both Haniger and team officials expressed their gratitude for his contributions to the organization.
Haniger joined the Mariners in 2017 after being traded from Arizona, where he made his MLB debut in 2016. During his first stint in Seattle, he batted .263 with 107 home runs and 306 RBIs, achieving a standout season in 2021 with career highs in home runs (39) and RBIs (100). Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to replicate that level of performance since. In spring training this year, Haniger struggled, going 3 for 18 with one home run, and hasn’t played in a Cactus League game since March 8. Mariners officials praised his work ethic and positive impact both on and off the field.
The release marks the end of Haniger’s tenure with the Mariners, where he made lasting memories and earned admiration from fans, teammates, and the organization.
