Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was shot and killed on December 4, 2024, outside the New York Hilton Midtown in Manhattan. The attack occurred early in the morning as Thompson was walking to the hotel for a corporate event. Authorities believe the shooting was a targeted assassination, as the gunman appeared to be lying in wait for Thompson. The suspect, described as a light-skinned man wearing a mask, fled the scene and remains at large. The incident has sparked a massive manhunt involving the NYPD, FBI, and other agencies.

Thompson’s death has drawn widespread attention and condemnation. He had been a prominent figure in the healthcare industry, leading UnitedHealthcare since 2021. The killing has also highlighted the vulnerabilities of high-profile executives and prompted discussions about the need for increased security measures. Luigi Mangione was arrested on a gun charge after being picked up while eating at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, following an employee calling the cops, the NYPD chief of detectives said. He had multiple fake IDs and a gun with a suppressor.
