At the Munich Security Conference, U.S. Vice President JD Vance criticized European leaders, while German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier criticized the Trump administration’s disregard for established partnerships. The tensions between the U.S. and Europe come as Ukraine struggles against Russian forces, which control 20% of the country.
Zelenskyy highlighted the stark contrast between the support from the Biden administration and the new White House approach under Trump, which has alarmed European leaders. Trump and his administration have suggested major concessions to Putin, causing concern among Ukraine’s supporters. Zelenskyy remains determined to reject any U.S.-Russia agreement made without his involvement, while Vance hinted at possible sanctions against Moscow.
Europe fears further aggression from Russia if Putin is seen as rewarded. Russia’s invasion is the bloodiest European conflict since World War II, with an estimated 1 million casualties, including hundreds of thousands of soldiers from both sides. NATO estimates an average of 10,000 people are killed or injured weekly in eastern Ukraine.
