The U.S. special envoy for Syria criticized recent Israeli airstrikes on a military airbase in northwestern Syria, calling them an unnecessary escalation that does not support regional stability. Ambassador Tom Barrack said the United States is deeply concerned and urged all sides to prioritize steady dialogue instead of more military action. Syrian state media reported that eight strikes hit the runway of the Abu Duhur air base in Idlib province, causing material damage but no casualties. The base has been under rehabilitation by Turkey, and foreign fighters who once stayed there were reportedly asked to leave. Israel did not comment on the attack, and Turkish officials did not immediately respond. The strikes come at a time of rising tensions between Israel and Turkey following the fall of Bashar Assad’s government in 2024, when insurgents took control of Damascus. Since then, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes across Syria to prevent Syrian military assets from being used by the new authorities. Although Syria’s new leadership says it does not want conflict with Israel, Israeli officials remain wary because the government includes former Islamist insurgents. Past Israeli attacks have killed Syrian soldiers, adding to instability in a country already devastated by years of war. The United States says it will continue hosting discussions to encourage steady dialogue over further violence.
