Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a snap election for April 28, citing the need for a strong mandate to address economic challenges posed by U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs and annexation threats. Carney, who recently replaced Justin Trudeau as leader of the Liberal Party, emphasized the urgency of securing Canada’s sovereignty and economic stability. The election, originally scheduled for October, will see Carney face off against leaders of major parties, including Pierre Poilievre (Conservative Party), Yves-François Blanchet (Bloc Québécois), and Jagmeet Singh (New Democratic Party).
Trump’s administration has imposed significant tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, prompting retaliatory measures from Canada and the European Union. Trump has also controversially suggested that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state, a notion Carney has firmly rejected as “crazy.” The situation underscores heightened tensions between the two nations.
