Millions of people gathered in Tehran for the funeral of Iran’s former supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed at the start of the war with the US and Israel. His coffin was carried through the city as huge crowds waved Iranian flags and red banners showing anger and a desire for revenge. Many mourners blamed the US and Israel for the attack, and some shouted slogans or held signs calling for action against them. Senior Iranian leaders attended the procession, but Khamenei’s son and new supreme leader, Mojtaba, did not appear because he was reportedly badly injured in the same strike. Khamenei ruled Iran for 37 years and kept strong control over politics, the military, and foreign policy. The government hopes the large crowds will show unity and strength after the war and recent protests inside the country. The funeral ceremonies are happening while Iran and the US are trying to negotiate a final peace agreement to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, an important route for global oil and gas. After the events in Tehran, Khamenei’s body will be taken to Qom, then to the Iraqi cities of Karbala and Najaf, before being buried in Mashhad. These ceremonies are meant to honor his long leadership and show national solidarity during a difficult moment for Iran.
