Trump emphasized the need for a ceasefire and peace settlement, warning of potential escalation into a larger conflict if unresolved. He also criticized Europe’s contributions to Ukraine’s defense and highlighted his administration’s decision to halt military aid, questioning Ukraine’s commitment to settling the conflict.

Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previewed additional sanctions on Russia, accusing the Biden administration of implementing weak measures that allowed Russia to finance its war efforts. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for a truce following a massive Russian attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s desire for peace and acknowledged European support, particularly from France, in defending against Russian aggression. National security adviser Mike Waltz announced plans to meet with a Ukrainian delegation to revive ceasefire talks.
