President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine met with President Trump at the White House earlier in the day. Their relationship, once strained, has recently improved. Zelensky described the meeting as “good,” and said they discussed diplomacy and Trump’s pledge to allow Ukraine to produce U.S.-designed Patriot air defense systems. The meeting was closed to reporters, a change from their first White House encounter last year, which had turned into a shouting match. This time, the focus was on restarting stalled peace talks with Russia and strengthening Ukraine’s air-defense capabilities. Zelensky arrived in Washington facing political pressure at home after dismissing both his defense minister and army chief. He hoped the meeting would help revive discussions about a possible cease-fire, and secure additional U.S. support. After leaving the White House, Zelensky planned to attend Senator Lindsey Graham’s memorial, Graham had been one of Ukraine’s strongest allies, and then meet with senators about new legislation targeting Iran and countries that purchase large amounts of Russian oil.
