The meeting was the first of several community sessions being held as Seattle searches for a new police leader after the departure of the previous chief. Residents discussed qualities they want in a candidate, including strong experience, good character, transparency, accessibility, and the ability to build trust with local communities. City officials said feedback from these meetings will help guide the selection process.
Public safety was the main concern raised by many attendees, especially because south Seattle has experienced shootings and youth violence in recent years. Residents called for a police chief who would focus on reducing gun violence, improving police response times, increasing safety around schools, and strengthening relationships between officers, families, and community groups. Some also praised the previous chief’s communication with neighborhoods and said they hope the next leader will be equally approachable. The city has already received applications for the position and plans to choose a new chief by the end of the year or shortly after if needed.
